You’ve probably heard to old adage that you should be drinking eight cups of water a day but turns out that isn’t entirely true. The amount of water you should drink varies depending on your physical activity, size, body composition, and even the weather outside. No matter what, drinking enough water is something many people struggle with, even though it is an essential part of almost every bodily function we have — from thinking to digestion, even to moving around.

If you struggle to drink enough water or just get bored with the lack of flavor, there are a few ways you can make your water not only taste better but also offer you more.

Get a little fruity

Adding your favorite fruit to your water is a great way to make it taste better, and also get some of the valuable nutrients from the fruit as well. For me, it’s like having an additional little snack. My personal favorite is lemon water with mulled blueberries — but, it can make a bit of a mess, so sometimes I just stick to water with lemon. What are some of the best fruits to infuse into your water?

  • Apples
  • Blueberries
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwi
  • Lemons and/or limes
  • Oranges
  • Pears
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon

Try a water additive

I drink so much water during the day that sometimes I just really crave a soda, even though I don’t love the way carbonation makes my stomach feel. Water additives like MIO can spice up your drink a bit, and they even have some flavors that kind of taste like soda. Besides that, there are a few that pack a bit of a punch with a boost of caffeine or electrolytes. I personally love the MIO energy, which I can mix into my water in the afternoon for a bit of a boost without reaching for yet another cup of coffee.

For an added bonus, I will sometimes mix a MIO energy or electrolyte additive with my fruit water to get the benefits of all of it together. My current favorite is the Acai MIO energy mixed with some chilled lemon water.

Mixing your water with other things

Mixing water with a bit of juice such as apple juice or orange juice definitely gives me a big pick-me-up, and if you’re absolutely fed up with drinking water all day, every day, adding a bit of juice is just the break that you might need — I know I sure do. This is a tip I got from my doctor after a rough bout of morning sickness, as sometimes water by itself can be rather harsh on the stomach. Half a glass of apple juice mixed with half a glass of water and I’m in heaven — well, at least compared to drinking just plain water.
